Obesity Surgery

One of the most concerning health problems of our time is obesity. It is reported that obesity affects more than 2 billion people worldwide and continues to rise. The main reasons behind this increase are physical inactivity and unhealthy eating habits. However, obesity is not an irreversible condition. Thanks to obesity surgery, many patients are able to overcome obesity and regain their health.

Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat that negatively affects health. In addition to poor nutrition and a sedentary lifestyle, genetic factors and hormonal imbalances can also lead to obesity. The main reason obesity requires treatment is due to its serious side effects. If left untreated, obesity can cause various health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and joint disorders.

How Is Obesity Measured?

Not every overweight person is considered obese. Today, the most commonly used method to identify obesity is the Body Mass Index (BMI). Simply put, BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight by the square of their height. According to the World Health Organization’s reference ranges, a BMI over 30 is classified as obese, over 40 as morbidly obese, and over 50 as super obese.

However, BMI alone may not always provide a complete picture. Factors such as age, gender, body fat percentage, and waist circumference can offer a more accurate assessment of obesity. For example, in women, having a body weight approximately 30% higher than the ideal weight indicates obesity, whereas for men this rate is around 25%. Therefore, if you suspect that you may be obese, it is essential to consult your doctor for a professional evaluation.

Who Is Eligible for Obesity Surgery?

Being diagnosed with obesity does not necessarily mean that a patient will undergo obesity surgery. Initially, non-surgical treatment methods should be attempted, and surgery should only be considered if these treatments fail to produce positive results. In such cases, obesity surgery is generally recommended for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40. However, there are certain exceptions to this rule, which include:

  • Patients with a BMI between 35 and 40 who also suffer from type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea, or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

  • Patients with a BMI between 30 and 35 whose blood sugar levels cannot be controlled despite receiving treatment for type 2 diabetes

In these cases, if there are no medical conditions preventing surgery and the patient does not have alcohol or substance addiction, surgical procedures can be safely performed.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are experiencing a technical issue related to a previous operation, a corrective surgery may be performed to address the problem.

However, if your weight gain is due to dietary habits, it is recommended that you make changes to your diet and adopt a healthier eating plan.

With parental consent, obesity surgery can also be performed on individuals under the age of 18. However, since such procedures may have psychological effects, both the preoperative and postoperative periods should be managed carefully and with professional support.

To help prevent muscle loss, it is generally recommended to consume protein-rich foods. High-calorie foods and carbonated beverages should also be avoided to support a healthy and sustainable recovery process.

Types of Obesity Treatments

Obesity is a serious condition that negatively affects quality of life and can lead to various health problems. Treatment methods vary depending on the patient’s weight, age, gender, and specific health conditions. In women, for instance, future pregnancy plans may also influence the choice of treatment method. All obesity surgery procedures aim to achieve sustainable weight loss and to reduce the health risks associated with obesity.

At Esteway Clinic, we offer the most effective and personalized treatment methods tailored to each patient’s individual needs. With advanced technology and modern medical techniques, we provide high-standard care in obesity treatment. Here are some of the treatment options we offer:

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass is one of the most common and effective surgical methods in obesity treatment. This procedure reduces the stomach’s capacity and allows food to reach the small intestine more quickly.

During the procedure:

  • The upper part of the stomach is stapled to create a small pouch.

  • The small intestine is divided between the duodenum and jejunum sections.

  • The jejunum is connected to the new small stomach pouch.

  • The duodenum is reattached further down the intestine.

This process reduces calorie intake and nutrient absorption. It often leads to improvement in conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea. However, rapid weight loss may increase the risk of gallstones, which is why regular follow-ups after surgery are essential.

Gastric Balloon

The gastric balloon is one of the least invasive obesity treatment options. It involves placing a balloon filled with air or saline into the stomach using an endoscopic method. The procedure is performed under mild anesthesia and takes about 20–25 minutes.

  • The balloon reduces the amount of food the patient can consume, creating an early feeling of fullness.

  • It remains in the stomach for up to one year and is later removed endoscopically in about 10 minutes.

After removal, if the patient returns to previous eating habits, weight regain can occur. Therefore, maintaining a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle after the procedure is crucial for lasting results.

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)

The goal of sleeve gastrectomy is to reduce the stomach’s size and limit food intake. During the procedure, a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a tube-shaped stomach.

  • The section of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone ghrelin is also removed, which helps reduce appetite.

  • Since nutrient absorption is not significantly affected, the body can still obtain the necessary vitamins and minerals.

Regular medical check-ups are vital after surgery. Adhering to dietary and lifestyle changes ensures long-term, sustainable weight loss.
